Bridging cultures: foreign languages in the age of digital communication
Main Article Content
Abstract
Globalization and the rapid development of digital technologies have profoundly reshaped the role of foreign languages in contemporary communication. Once confined to academic, diplomatic, or travel-related contexts, foreign languages now function as essential tools for participation in international discourse, online collaboration, and intercultural exchange. This study investigates how digital platforms influence foreign language learning and usage, emphasizing their potential to bridge cultural gaps and foster global connectivity. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining a systematic literature review (2015–2025), an online survey of 150 university students from diverse linguistic backgrounds, and case studies of three digital platforms (Duolingo, Zoom, and international social media communities). The findings reveal that digital tools significantly enhance accessibility to language learning, promote intercultural awareness, and increase professional opportunities in global contexts. However, challenges such as miscommunication, reliance on machine translation, and loss of cultural nuance persist. The results highlight the dual nature of digital multilingual communication: while it democratizes access and fosters intercultural dialogue, it also requires careful attention to cultural sensitivity and linguistic depth. The study concludes that integrating intercultural training into digital language education and developing AI-driven tools that respect cultural diversity are essential steps toward maximizing the benefits of foreign languages in the digital age. Ultimately, the synergy between language learning and digital communication holds the potential to create a more connected, culturally aware, and collaborative global society.
