Abstract

Pneumonia is a common and potentially serious respiratory infection that affects the lungs. It is characterized by inflammation of the lung tissue (especially the alveoli — tiny air sacs responsible for gas exchange) and can range in severity from mild to life-threatening. Pneumonia remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide despite advances in medicine and public health.
