Speed reading as a tool for improving English speaking skills
Main Article Content
Abstract
This methodological guide explores the application of the Speed Reading (SR) technique as an effective tool for improving English speaking skills in the EFL classroom. The study addresses a common challenge faced by learners—hesitation and lack of fluency during oral communication—despite having adequate grammatical knowledge and vocabulary. The proposed approach integrates structured speed reading activities with speaking tasks to enhance learners’ cognitive processing speed, linguistic automatism, and confidence. The guide presents a practical framework for incorporating SR into a 45-minute lesson and across regular classroom practice. It includes a detailed lesson structure, clearly defined objectives, and a wide range of time-limited, communicative tasks designed to promote fast thinking, spontaneous speech, pronunciation accuracy, and fluency. Activities such as rapid retelling, shadow reading, fast dialogues, vocabulary sprints, and time-restricted debates are described as effective strategies for fostering active participation and reducing speaking anxiety. The methodology is grounded in international research on fluency development and supported by classroom-based practice. Special attention is given to differentiated instruction, learner motivation, and progress monitoring through digital tools such as Google Sheets and Excel. The findings indicate that regular use of speed reading techniques contributes to improved reading rates, faster response times, enhanced speaking fluency, and increased learner confidence. The guide demonstrates that Speed Reading, when combined with communicative speaking activities and learner-centered strategies, can significantly enhance overall communicative competence in the EFL context and create a dynamic, engaging learning environment..
