Contemporary clinical perspectives on amenorrhea
Main Article Content
Abstract
Amenorrhea is still a telltale sign of a malfunctioning reproductive axis, but its relevance now goes beyond gynecology. Over the past ten years, the clinical presentation of amenorrhea has changed, with metabolic problems (like insulin resistance), stress and energy imbalances (functional hypothalamic suppression), and medication-induced hormonal abnormalities making up an increasing proportion of cases observed in student-age and general practice environments. These drivers interact with socioeconomic challenges such stress, sleep, and academic pressure as well as public health trends such obesity epidemics, widespread use of contraception and psychotropic drugs, which results in patterns of menstrual loss that have consequences for fertility, bone health, cardiometabolic risk, and psychological well-being. This piece brings together existing clinical observations and mechanical knowledge, emphasizes the impact of population, and pinpoints pressing research requirements.
