Abstract

Thyroid hormones are essential for the growth, development and optimal functioning of the central nervous system. The brain represents a target-organ for the thyroid hormones, and their deficit has well-documented adverse effects on cognitive and emotional functioning. People with hypothyroidism commonly experience a series of neuropsychic symptoms such as impaired attention and memory, anxiety, depression and rarely episodes of psychosis.
