Surgery in the practice of a family doctor: Primary surgical treatment of wounds, removal of sutures. Primary medical care
Main Article Content
Abstract
Minor surgical procedures are an important part of a family doctor’s daily practice. These include the primary surgical treatment of wounds, removal of sutures, and providing initial medical care to patients with minor injuries. Family doctors play a key role in managing such cases, especially in rural or primary health settings where hospital facilities may not be easily available. The goal of primary surgical treatment is to clean, disinfect, and properly close the wound to prevent infection and promote healing. Safe removal of sutures at the correct time also supports recovery and reduces scarring. A family doctor must follow basic surgical principles such as aseptic technique, pain control, and proper wound assessment. Providing these services at the primary care level improves patient trust and reduces the burden on hospitals. This article discusses the essential skills, equipment, and procedures needed for effective minor surgical care in general practice.
