The effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of complex chronic diseases: a comparative analysis of 5 clinical cases

Abstract

Modern treatments for chronic diseases (e.g. NSAIDs, hormonal therapy) are mainly focused on symptom management, which entails long-term medication use and significant side effects. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a systemic approach that targets the root cause of the disease through Acupuncture. This study comparatively analyzes the treatment outcomes of 5 different clinical cases suffering from the following complex chronic conditions: Chronic migraine (Patient 3), dry eye syndrome and menopausal symptoms (Patient 2), carpal tunnel syndrome and cervical spondylosis (Patient 1), knee pain caused by cold-damp blockage (Patient 4), and amenorrhea accompanied by hormonal imbalance (Patient 5). Treatment protocols consisted of individual Acupuncture (classical and electroacupuncture) sessions. Acupuncture treatment produced faster and more stable results in all 5 cases. The onset of efficacy was usually observed within 1–3 sessions/week. The overall symptomatic improvement rate was in the range of 60%–90%. In addition, acupuncture simultaneously relieved systemic complaints such as sleep disturbances, stress reactivity, and hormonal balance. Acupuncture is recommended as a fundamental alternative or supportive treatment method that is faster, more profound, and without side effects in the management of chronic and complex conditions compared to modern medicine.
