NATO and its role in modern international relations

Abstract

The article examines the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as a key institution in contemporary international relations and security governance. It outlines NATO’s origins in 1949 and explains how the alliance’s core principle of collective defense has shaped stability in the Euro-Atlantic space by deterring large-scale military confrontation. The paper highlights NATO’s evolution beyond a strictly military bloc, emphasizing its political role through dialogue, crisis management, and cooperation with partner states. Particular attention is given to NATO’s practical contributions via peace-support and stabilization missions, including operations in the Balkans and Afghanistan, as well as capacity-building assistance such as training, consultations, and technical support in defense and security. At the same time, the article notes that NATO’s activities remain contested: critics argue that the alliance’s enlargement can heighten geopolitical tensions and affect the global balance of power. The author concludes that NATO continues to function as an influential political and security actor, adapting to emerging threats - especially cyberattacks and terrorism - while remaining a central element of the international security architecture.
