Bio-based ionic liquids as green catalysts in organic synthesis

Abstract

The transition toward sustainable chemistry has driven the search for environmentally friendly catalytic systems. Bio-based ionic liquids (Bio-ILs), synthesized from renewable biological resources such as amino acids, choline chloride, and organic acids, represent a promising alternative to conventional ionic liquids. These biodegradable and non-volatile materials act simultaneously as solvents and catalysts, reducing waste and improving process efficiency. This study explores the synthesis, structural characterization, and catalytic behavior of Bio-ILs in essential organic transformations, including esterification, aldol condensation, and oxidation reactions. The findings highlight their superior catalytic performance, high selectivity, and excellent recyclability, confirming Bio-ILs as practical tools for advancing green organic synthesis.
