Abstract

Vocabulary is widely recognized as the cornerstone of second language (L2) proficiency. However, its precise role in the development of communicative skills remains a subject of scholarly debate. This article reviews current research on the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and communicative competence in L2 learning. Drawing on theories and empirical evidence from the fields of second language acquisition, applied linguistics, and cognitive linguistics, we synthesize the latest scientific insights to clarify how vocabulary contributes to effective communication in a foreign language. The analysis reveals general agreement that lexical knowledge serves as the foundation for communicative competence. It enables learners to understand information, formulate meaningful utterances, and participate in dialogue, ensuring not only correct speech but also coherence, appropriateness, and fluency. Research also emphasizes the multifaceted nature of lexical knowledge, including its breadth, depth, and speed of access. Cognitive and interactionist approaches agree that vocabulary is acquired most effectively through meaningful communication, when words are used and applied in context. By integrating various research approaches, we highlight the close connection between vocabulary development and communicative competence. This article calls for a more holistic understanding of vocabulary as a key element of communicative skills and suggests directions for further research and teaching. Our review contributes to current debates by summarizing current ideas and outlining paths toward more comprehensive models of second-language communicative development.
