Abstract

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become indispensable tools in the field of urban planning and sustainable development. Their ability to collect, manage, analyze, and visualize spatial data enables decision-makers to design more resilient, eco-friendly, and efficient cities. By integrating GIS with environmental monitoring, land-use planning, and infrastructure management, urban planners can address pressing issues such as rapid population growth, traffic congestion, pollution, and climate change adaptation. This paper explores the role of GIS technologies in shaping sustainable urban environments, highlights best practices in different countries, and emphasizes the importance of integrating GIS with innovative approaches such as artificial intelligence (AI) and remote sensing for future-oriented city management.
